Case Study: Baby Tips - Cross-platform Tool
This project was for my Google UX Design Professional Certificate . The objective of the course was to learn the foundations of UX design, including empathizing with users, building wireframes and prototypes, and conducting research to test the designs. I completed this project over the course of 3 weeks, and learned how to use and implement mockups and prototypes on Figma.
Tools used: Figma, Adobe Photoshop, pen and paper.
My role: UX Designer designing a mobile app and a responsive website for Baby Tips from conception to delivery.
Responsibilities: Conducting interviews, papel and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, account for accessibility and iterating on designs.
The Product
Baby Tips is a mobile app and a responsive website created to help adults learn about being a first-time parent.
The Problem
On the internet you can find a lot of information and tips about being a first-time parent, but this information is not always reliable or compiled in the same place.
The Goal
Create an organized and categorized platform, with basic tips and integration between users on being a first-time parent.
User Research
For this project, quantitative research was carried out to discover the most relevant categories for the platform. Interviews were also conducted, where it was possible to find problems and improvements for users to get a better use of the platform.
Persona: Lana
Problem statement: Lana is a first-time parent who needs a organized and accessible platform to found tips about how to take care of her baby because she needs to see content from credible sources and discuss motherhood topics with people in the same situation.Â
Starting the Design
Ideation
An audit of a few competitor’s products provided direction on gaps and opportunities to address with the Baby Tips Cross-platform.Â
I did a quick ideation exercise to come up with ideas for how to address gaps identified in the competitive audit. My focus was on the compilation of the information for the app.
Digital Wireframes
To improve the initial design, the results of the user research and paper wireframes were studied and adapted to the digital wireframe for the app.
Low-fidelity prototype
The low-fidelity prototype presented a initial way to construct the user flow based on feedback.
Usability study: findings
Navigation
Users like to have the option to go back to the last page instead of only back to the home page
Categorization
The subcategories inside a theme are very important for the users
Information
Users like to read general information when they are looking for specific tips
Refining the design
After the usability study, page navigation has been improved with a side menu and a way to return to the previous page.
For the website version, a clean home page has been maintained and key information is easily found.
Mockups
High-fidelity Prototype
The final high-fidelity prototype presented cleaner user flows. View the Baby Tips High-fidelity prototype
Responsive designs
Sitemap
With the app designs completed, I started work on designing the responsive website I used the survey results to build the main topics for the site's structure and make it cohesive with users' expectations.
The designs for screen size variation included mobile, tablet and desktop. I optimized the designs to fit specific user needs for each device and screen size.
Accessibility considerations
The initial focus of the home page has recommendations with the most relevant topics for users define the primary task or action for the user;
The colors used in the project were adapted for accessibility issues.
Takeaways
Impact
Users shared that the app can be very useful for parents who are learning about how to take care of their babies, as it is good to have the answers to basic problems that can come up during any time of the day.
It is also important to have access to a community with other parents in a moderated environment.
What I learned
With this project I learned that the problem to be solved is big, and the design in this case can help first-time parents to solve some problems that before might take time to solve. In addition, I also learned that it is important to maintain an interaction platform with other users going through similar situations, so in addition to helping to solve problems, it is also possible to have new ideas and inspirations.
Next steps
Conduct research on how successful the app is helping first-time parents with daily situations, add more educational resources and content and make a post launch study.
